Temperature measurement range is the core parameter of temperature sensor selection, which directly determines the adaptability of products to working conditions, and is also one of the primary indicators concerned by procurement and R&D personnel. Many practitioners only stay on the nominal limit value when understanding the temperature measurement range, believing that the marked range is the accuracy range available in the whole interval, leading to problems such as exceeding measurement accuracy standards, accelerated component aging, and even premature damage in actual use. In fact, temperature sensors with different principles have extremely different temperature measurement ranges, from ultra-low temperature below zero to high temperature of thousands of degrees belonging to different categories; and the nominal limit range only represents the bearable temperature boundary, only part of the interval can guarantee the nominal accuracy, and the actual available range is also restricted by multiple factors such as packaging materials, accuracy requirements, and working conditions. This paper systematically expands from four dimensions: core definition, range characteristics of mainstream categories, actual restricting factors, and selection principles, and provides clear and professional selection references for various temperature measurement scenarios combined with industry application experience.
To correctly understand the temperature measurement range, we first need to distinguish three different levels of temperature intervals to avoid selection deviation caused by conceptual confusion:
1. Limit Temperature Measurement Range: It refers to the temperature limit at which the sensor element does not suffer physical damage or irreversible performance drift, and only represents the bearable temperature boundary. Near the endpoints of the limit range, the measurement error of the sensor will increase significantly, and long-term operation will greatly shorten the service life. It is usually only used as a tolerance reference for short-term extreme working conditions, not a normal working range.
2. Effective Working Temperature Zone: It refers to the temperature interval in which the sensor can guarantee the nominal accuracy grade, and is the core basis for selection. In the effective working temperature zone, the error value of the product meets the corresponding accuracy standard, with stable and reliable performance, and is the recommended use range under conventional working conditions.
3. Optimal Accuracy Interval: It refers to the temperature interval with the highest measurement accuracy and best stability, usually located in the middle section of the range. For scenarios with strict requirements for temperature measurement accuracy, priority should be given to making the working temperature fall within the optimal accuracy interval to achieve the best measurement effect.
Temperature sensors with different principles have significantly different temperature measurement ranges based on their own physical characteristics, and their respective effective working areas and optimal accuracy intervals also have their own focuses, which are the core basis for category selection.
NTC thermistors are semiconductor ceramic temperature measuring elements and are mainstream products in medium and low temperature scenarios:
· Limit Temperature Measurement Range: Conventional products are -55℃ to 260℃, and products using high-temperature ceramics and special packaging technology can be extended to 300℃; low-temperature products can cover down to -60℃.
· Effective Working Temperature Zone: The interval that can guarantee the nominal accuracy is -40℃ to 200℃. After exceeding 200℃, the resistance drift accelerates and the error gradually exceeds the nominal range.
· Optimal Accuracy Interval: -10℃ to 100℃. In this interval, NTC has the highest temperature sensitivity, and high-precision products can achieve a measurement error of ±0.1℃, which is the section with the best performance. The temperature measurement range characteristics of NTC determine that it is suitable for medium and low temperature scenarios such as home appliance temperature control, new energy battery management, consumer electronics, and environmental monitoring, with both cost and performance advantages.
Platinum RTDs use high-purity platinum metal as the sensing element, with stable physical and chemical properties, and are the first choice for high-precision temperature measurement in the medium-wide temperature range:
· Limit Temperature Measurement Range: Conventional industrial products are -200℃ to 850℃, and the upper limit of the range specified by the standard IEC 60751 is 850℃; some specially packaged products can withstand 1000℃ for a short time.
· Effective Working Temperature Zone: The effective interval of Class AA accuracy is -50℃ to 250℃, Class A accuracy is -100℃ to 450℃, and Class B accuracy can cover the full range of -200℃ to 850℃. The higher the accuracy grade, the relatively narrower the effective temperature zone.
· Optimal Accuracy Interval: 0℃ to 400℃. In this interval, platinum RTDs have the best linearity and the most uniform error, and are the core working interval for industrial process control and metrological testing. The wide temperature range, high accuracy and high stability of platinum RTDs make them widely used in industrial process control, medical equipment, food processing, metrological calibration and other scenarios.
Thermocouples work based on the Seebeck effect and are irreplaceable temperature measurement solutions for high-temperature scenarios. Different calibration numbers correspond to different temperature measurement ranges:
· Type K Thermocouples: The most commonly used general-purpose thermocouples, with a limit range of -200℃ to 1300℃ and an effective working temperature range of -40℃ to 1200℃. They are the mainstream choice for industrial high-temperature scenarios from 300℃ to 1200℃, with outstanding cost performance.
· Type J Thermocouples: Temperature measurement range is -40℃ to 750℃, suitable for medium and low temperature reducing environments, with stable performance in vacuum and reducing atmospheres.
· Type S Thermocouples (Platinum-Rhodium 10/Platinum): Noble metal thermocouples with a temperature measurement range of 0℃ to 1600℃, high accuracy and good stability, suitable for high-temperature precision measurement and calibration scenarios.
· Type B Thermocouples (Platinum-Rhodium 30/Platinum-Rhodium 6): Ultra-high temperature noble metal thermocouples with a temperature measurement range of 0℃ to 1800℃, which can work above 1600℃ for a long time, and are the first choice for ultra-high temperature working conditions such as metallurgy, glass, and ceramics. Thermocouples overall cover an ultra-wide temperature range of -200℃ to 1800℃, but have low accuracy in the low temperature section and large errors below 300℃, making them more suitable for scenarios above medium and high temperatures.
The nominal temperature measurement range is an indicator under ideal experimental conditions. The available temperature interval in actual use is restricted by multiple factors and is often smaller than the nominal value, which is also the core reason why many users feel "inaccurate at high temperatures".
1. Temperature Resistance Limit of Packaging Materials and Structures: The actual operating temperature upper limit of the sensor depends not only on the core element, but also on the temperature resistance of the packaging shell, sealing material, and lead material. For example, the temperature resistance upper limit of plastic-encapsulated NTC is only 105℃, far lower than the 260℃ of the chip itself; ordinary silicone leads withstand 200℃, and Teflon or high-temperature glass fiber leads need to be replaced in high-temperature scenarios.
2. Reverse Constraint of Accuracy Requirements: The higher the accuracy requirement, the narrower the corresponding effective temperature zone. For example, an NTC with a nominal ±0.5℃ only meets this accuracy in the interval of -10℃ to 100℃. After exceeding this interval, the error will gradually expand. If it is required to maintain ±0.5℃ throughout the whole process, the actual available range is much smaller than the nominal range.
3. Long-term Stability and Aging Rate: Working at a temperature close to the upper limit for a long time will accelerate the aging of the element, speed up the resistance drift, and gradually fail the accuracy. For example, when PT100 works above 800℃ for a long time, platinum grains will grow, leading to zero drift, and the actual long-term reliable operating temperature is lower than the limit range.
4. Influence of Environment and Installation Conditions: Harsh working conditions such as strong corrosion, strong vibration, and high pressure will reduce the temperature resistance of components and packages, further compressing the actual available temperature measurement range. At the same time, installation environmental factors such as radiative heat transfer and airflow cooling will also cause the actual temperature measurement of the sensor to fail to reach the nominal upper temperature limit.
When selecting, the wider the range, the better. It is necessary to scientifically match according to actual needs and follow the following core principles:
Make the daily working temperature fall within the optimal accuracy interval of the sensor, prioritize ensuring the measurement accuracy of common working conditions, rather than pursuing the ultimate wide range. The accuracy of wide-range sensors in specific intervals is often inferior to that of narrow-range special products, and the cost is higher.
According to the fluctuation of working conditions, reserve a temperature margin of 10%~20% to avoid short-term extreme working conditions exceeding the tolerance range of the element and prolong the service life. For example, in a scenario with a maximum working temperature of 200℃, a product with an upper limit of 250℃ can be selected instead of a model with exactly 200℃.
Scenarios with high accuracy requirements preferentially select products whose optimal accuracy interval covers the working temperature; for scenarios with low accuracy requirements and large temperature spans, wide-range products can be selected to balance performance and cost.
· Home Appliances and Consumer Electronics: Working temperature -20℃ to 150℃, conventional NTC of -55℃ to 260℃ is sufficient, with the best cost performance;
· New Energy Battery Management: Working temperature -40℃ to 85℃, high-precision NTC is selected, which falls within the optimal accuracy interval to ensure accurate measurement;
· Industrial Process Control: Working temperature -20℃ to 500℃, PT100 platinum RTDs are preferred, taking into account accuracy and range;
· High-Temperature Industrial Furnaces: Working temperature 300℃ to 1200℃, select Type K thermocouples; for above 1200℃, select Type S and Type B noble metal thermocouples;
· Cryogenic and Low-Temperature Engineering: Working temperature -200℃ to 0℃, select low-temperature PT100 or Type T thermocouples.

All in all, there is no unified standard value for the temperature measurement range of temperature sensors. The range span of different principle categories is extremely large, and the actual available interval is restricted by multiple factors such as accuracy, packaging, and working conditions. When selecting, we should break away from the misunderstanding of "range-only theory", focus on the core working temperature zone, and reasonably match with accuracy requirements and working environment. Dongguan Jingpin Electronics will continue to improve the full temperature range product system and provide reliable temperature measurement solutions for customers in various industries with professional calibration capabilities and customized services.
